What Makes an Underhill Pavilion?

Underhill Pavilions have earned a reputation for elegant proportions, dependable construction, and timeless design. Their distinctive appearance has become a familiar sight at Renaissance festivals and living history events across the country.

At Starlight Structures, we continue building these iconic pavilions while making thoughtful improvements that simplify setup, improve durability, and preserve the beauty that made them legendary.

The Underhill Legacy

For decades, Jeff Underhill built some of the most recognizable pavilions in the Renaissance festival community. His eye for proportion, craftsmanship, and color created structures that became admired throughout the country and earned a reputation that still carries weight today.

When the opportunity arose to continue the Underhill tradition, I knew simply owning the patterns wasn't enough. My goal became preserving what people loved about these pavilions—the recognizable color combinations, elegant proportions, and unmistakable character—while thoughtfully improving their construction for future generations.

Every pavilion I build today is both a tribute to that legacy and a commitment to carrying it forward with the same pride and attention to detail.

Materials

Just like with cooking, you've gotta start with quality ingredients Every pavilion is handcrafted using carefully selected materials chosen for durability, longevity, and ease of maintenance.

•Sunbrella has been the name brand relied upon for any outdoor and marine applications. Its designed to be resistant to the elements. Earth- mold and mildew are easily washed off. Air- UV Resistant meaning your colors wont fade over time. Fire- The fabric has been treated to meet california standards. Water- Resistance means you won't have to deal with any leaks.

•The corner fixtures are made of Stainless steel.

•The tent poles are made out fencing pipe and are 16 gauge Galvanized pipe for rust-free durability.

•The thread I use is specifically UV resistant and water repellent  so that you don't have to worry about the seams leaking

Construction

There's no shortcut to building a pavilion that will last for decades.

Before sewing my first Underhill Pavilion, I spent months studying the original construction methods, rebuilding and calibrating Jeff's industrial sewing machines, testing materials, and refining my own process. My goal wasn't simply to recreate these pavilions—it was to build them with the consistency and quality they deserve.

Every structural seam is double stitched. Every pattern is carefully measured. Every pavilion is inspected throughout the build because consistency matters just as much as craftsmanship.

When my name is on a pavilion, I want every customer to feel confident knowing exactly what they're receiving.

Classic Colors

The classic Underhill color palette has become instantly recognizable throughout Renaissance festivals across the country.

When it came time to continue building these pavilions, preserving those traditional color combinations became one of my highest priorities. I worked extensively to source fabrics that maintain the familiar appearance people have trusted for years while meeting today's quality standards for durability and performance.
